I can relate! The will to forge onward is often met with the realization of futility. Whatever we are selling -- whether it is ourselves or some physical product we've produced -- gets entangled in a confusing mess of emotion, finance and social psychology. And yet, and yet... Where the work is good, if not great, it somehow has to continue. In your case, I'd say that this is the case. Because it is great. Face forward, step, act.

Yep, can certainly relate to this. Giving up isn't really an option, I find focussing on the quality of work helps, as long as you feel your making progress it's worth continuing.

Superb. I found this really moving and powerful. They are at once timeless, and still so present and forceful. I love the images that have the great range of depth-of-field. Really, really beautiful. Spacious.

I guess in some ways ACE will try and keep plates spinning, and focus on shoring up those organisations that meet their targets and tick boxes. Within that, it is highly likely that smaller bodies will lose out and look to try and turn to their local authority, private investment or other funding sources to keep them afloat.

And yes, a silver lining could come be a united, less amorphous arts industry. That would be a welcome platform for the future.

Great stuff, I agree entirely.

One thing I am intrigued about is whether the Arts Council will just ignore small arts start-ups altogether and focus on the big projects or whether the bigger projects will be asked to get more private investment, and the AC focus their limited resources on small and independent artists without the resource to attract alternative investment.

The Public art gallery in West Brom cost the Arts Council millions (£3 million just so they wouldn't charge for entry), this coincided with the closure of my friend's gallery down the road because the Arts Council wouldn't give them a grant of £1k to help pay the rent for the year.

The Arts Council is far from perfect, and although I'm disgusted at these cuts, I'm hoping the silver lining is that they refocus their efforts on those with great plans and no resources. That would be the foundation of an even greater arts industry for this country.

I have just finished watching C4 footage on the decisions people made as the earthquake struck/tsunami swamped towns; it was shocking the speed that the water travelled at.
